The History Behind Forever One

Harmonies of Healing

Music is humanity’s soul. In a world full of noise, it heals, connects and inspires—breaking barriers and allowing us to not only hear, but truly listen. Music holds us when we cannot hold ourselves.

Las Vegas has long been a place where music brings people together. With its world class entertainment, people come from every corner of the planet to feel the pulse of Vegas’ legendary energy and connect through the universal language of song.

On the final night of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on 1 October 2017, 22,000 people gathered at festival grounds on the Strip to celebrate the joy of music together. Despite an attempt to shatter the unbreakable and unifying power of music, the survivors who remain still bond through their shared love of song. As the community continues its journey toward healing, music remains a guiding light, a source of harmony among chaos.

850 people were injured and 58 lives were taken on 1 October 2017. Beyond the 58 who lost their lives on the evening of 1 October, in the months and years since, two lost their lives as a result of injuries suffered that night, and others have since passed from physical and psychological wounds. We honor all those impacted by the tragedy who will Forever carry scars and loss. The following is a condensed timeline of events on that tragic night.

10:17pm- 10:26pm

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Las Vegas showed the world its heart and soul, unifying under the banner of Vegas Strong. Together, we became safer, more compassionate, and more just.

A Resiliency & Justice Center was born to serve the victims’ families and survivors, and now serves as a permanent beacon and resource for all victims of violent crime. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department adopted nearly all 93 recommendations outlined in its 1 October After-Action Review and now has best practices and technologies making us safer, more secure, and better prepared. And now, the Forever One Memorial will be an enduring place for healing and to always remember those we lost and the wounds survivors still carry.

The world rallied together, offering support, comfort, and strength to those who needed it most. From small acts of kindness to generous contributions, people everywhere stepped up and gave what they could. The hashtag #VegasStrong swept across social media, and community-made memorials sprung up throughout the area, showing a longing for a tangible place of remembrance. Hurt echoed throughout our community, but ripples of goodness lifted us back up in those moments of darkness. What emerged from tragedy was an ecosystem of healing that extends far beyond Las Vegas, crossing boundaries, bridging communities, and inspiring acts of compassion all over the world.

The Forever One Memorial will be the next step in our journey toward healing. It will stand as a beacon of resilience, a reminder of who we’ve lost, and a place where future generations can understand the power of unity and love, even in the face of tragedy.

The only way to go from this moment is forward, and we’ll do it together, Forever One.
